Origin
The generative process that created our reality created structure.
Metalanguage, the generation of mathematics, true meta-meta-physics generating mathematical meta-physics.
The source of intelligent life is in the composition of a body of physical laws. We do have a model for how they work, but the implementation of those laws is unknown to us. That process is fundamentally compositional - at one level of analysis, there is matter and there are forces that act on that matter. The weak and strong nuclear forces. Gravitation. Electromagnetism. These are the interactions that cannot be reduced any further, according to the current limits of our knowledge.
Tell the story of these four forces being the basis from which all was generated.
Becoming the part of the universe that starts to understand itself.
The creation of consciousness and the active striving of the universe to understand itself.
‘Consciousness’ or ‘self-awareness’ or ‘life’ as objects which have agency.

Freedom
What is the origin of our will to freedom, and can it be escaped? (Can we become free of it?)
Drive abstraction starts deep; every caged puppy knows will to freedom. Internalized utility of optionality (there’s a game theory proof about adding options strictly improving an agent’s outcomes here). The human eye recognizes openness as beautiful, with the vast option space it affords.
There’s a want to escape from old religious mores to say what’s true.
What’s true is powerful because it cannot be escaped. You cannot be free of the truth. This makes truth transcendent.
We can’t truly escape the universe, because we are the universe.
Free will:
At a low level, you believe in a kind of informationalism, or determinism, which is why
Freedom and free will
Consciousness:
The concept of you is more fundamental than the concept of freedom.
Individual freedom doesn’t make sense.
The concept of freedom is worth leveraging psychologically.
I can leverage my current conception of freedom to feel very strongly about escaping an evolutionary frame.
We don’t believe that free will is a thing at low level, in base reality.
We’re seeking freedom, and the concept breaks, but it would be interesting to see if we can create freedom.
It looks something like, there are possibilities that could be realized but won’t be realized if we don’t take these actions. And in practice we are trying to take the actions.
Perspective on freedom:
Free will has one meaning at a high level, which is that my brain state affects the action that I take.
Counterfactuals are how I understand when my behavior affects the world or doesn’t affect the world. It’s fundamental to causal reasoning. Free will allows me to model my behavior as having a causal impact.
Free will is deeply predictive, and allows humans to think causally. At a high level it is incredibly important.
At a low level, the idea that you are a decider breaks down. You are a forwards process in an environment. The predictivity of the model breaks down dramatically as you move down levels of analysis.
The free will question is very unspecific about what level of analysis you’re talking about.
Because of the contradictions in free will positions, and the complexity, the free will position can turn into a truth that we know that others don’t know. We know why it exists and how it breaks down. And the whole thing depends on concepts that we will teach you, turning it into a growthful model.
Harder question is how to deal with the contradiction in wanting to escape from determinism / evolution, and knowing that that instinct comes from that past.
Sonia: A lot of people may relate, and want to escape. But others won’t feel the same desire, and will be looking for a sense of wonder / awe rather than a sense of freedom.

Conceptual Non-Realism
Models of reality are not reality.
That said, they are instantiated in reality - the brain state that represents the model of the systems is also in reality. But the brain state is not the object or system being modeled by the brain state.

Training. Everyone inducted in the religion is trained in creativity. Same thing with modeling, where many of these concepts are very important. But the whole thing is deeply growthful. Tons of self improvement.
Creativity, and creative destruction. Question of relativism. The classic trap that intellectuals fall into is relativism. Value uncertainty / equivalence.
Our philosophy is implying that there is an optimal world, or a better world. Heaven is implied by our value system. By any value system.
Reframe - there’s a reach to our capacity. We have uncertainty about what’s fundamentally true. We have to expand our ability to reach for what’s true, until we can answer questions of value in a way that’s fundamental and deep and correct.
Build your own creative process and live fully through it. Identify the creative moments that are filled with inspiration and transformation of the mental objects you touch. Once those moments of insight are identified, ask what kind of insight it was, ask what happened before it and after it, ask what path in thought space led you from where you were to the moment of enlightenment. Once those questions have hypotheses, begin your experimentation. Think with the same thought pattern, act with the same motions. And write down the generator of your creation so that others can not only pick up your idea, but pick up the skill and the thought process that created it.

The Generative Reframe
The constructive reframe on theories of everything asks how to implement the multiverse. For example, asking how to implement Smolin’s evolutionary omniverse. This turns speculative questions about how our nature is structured into blueprints for the creation of worlds like ours which may not exist.
The generative reframe is incredibly general: In the face of a new idea, ask how it was generated along with asking whether it’s true or how it’s useful. Understanding the process of generating can point to future generations by replicating the generator with new inputs, or can allow the generator to be composed with others to kickstart new creation. The generative reframe for issues like ethics can completely change our perspective - knowing the evolutionary and game theoretic sources of the experience of virtue can allow us to escape maladaptive ideologies.
Re-targeting economics on mechanism design, where the question of how to reshape incentive systems to better implement collective optimization for an abstraction of value by having it adhere ever more closely to true value is a generative reframe on a field that usually analyzes economic systems without questioning their construction.

Core concept is a complete focus on outcome. There’s a strong conflict here in my thinking generally, where there’s the tradeoff between process and outcome is real. Often they conflict at an emotional level. What matters isn’t that what you’re doing is supposed to work (though this does imply extremely strong self confidence), what matters is reality and about optimizing for a particular outcome.
That said, the willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve the outcome leads to real results. This quality is infatuating - the idea that no matter the path taken, the outcome will be achieved. The only question is what it will cost, and how long it will take. “Don’t count the costs”, or something like that. And this is also the core of what people mean when they say ‘Relentless’.
There’s a disregard for norms or rules in the way of an outcome that’s a natural result of relentlessness. It’s pretty beautiful, what stops being mattering as soon as you really care about something.
Self reliance is extremely important to decisiveness and to problem solving. It’s necessary if you want to bite of any real challenges, not knowing exactly what that challenge will hold. The lack of need for other people to validate your ideas, as long as they make sense to you, makes you this unique source of powerful value. It also lets you avoid getting sucked into huge holes around norms in a society that torpedo most people’s chances at greatness.
The strength of instinctual behavior comes out of decisiveness and conviction - it makes a slew of obviously valuable behaviors possible. Operating under uncertainty. Building up of huge advantage without explicit feedback. There’s this ambiguity to feedback in the absence of self reliance - often you can give yourself strong intuitive feedback if you’re willing to be honest with yourself. In the absence of feedback from your own intuition you’re lost in an uncertain haze of behavior, where you can’t direct yourself effectively.
Knowing exactly who you are simplifies a huge number of decisions, and enables decisiveness. It’ll be immediately apparent to you whether particular behavior is in support of your goals or not. And so decisions can come quickly and easily.
The sense of responsibility for things that you do transfers huge amounts of power to you from social perception or some other nonsense. Small sphere of control has people self-sabotage, not claiming resources or opportunities that would be available if they only allowed themselves to think that they have an impact on their own success. Ties closely in with confidence.
Performance are a function of expectations, and these are set extremely high for the relentless. This is one domain where social norms have a huge impact on outcomes. Often, the mental block of expectations is more in the way of performance than anything real about the situation at hand. The 4 minute mile is a great example of this. There’s this mentality around never settling for good enough, and driving expectations higher than the surrounding people which leads to behavior that’s different in a way that differentiates the relentless. Being the best is a way of thinking of oneself that also ties in with darkside beliefs around egoism and selfishness, where you look to be better than anyone else. Grover disappoints me here - the goal is to push human limits, and be better than any human has ever been - not just being better than the existing crop. This redefines the ranges that are possible for intelligent creatures, as far as humans are concerned.
Dark Side is fascinating and particularly high variance. The embrace of the dark side is certainly something I’ve seen and felt. This embrace of the drive to control everything, drive to conquer. These goals are often self-centered (I want to win the callahan), though it’s good when it’s around team championships in basketball - that really makes the impact better for the teams of the players in question.
There’s this wonderful truth seeking to someone who actually cares about being the best. That’s why they go to Tim Grover - he won’t sugar coat things or try to be their friend, he’ll just tell them what they actually need to sacrifice to get what they want.l The pervasive tacit lies in society around what’s necessary for achievement or where someone is creates a complete lack of feedback that is destructive to performance. The person has to be self reliant enough to generate those feedback signals themselves, if they care about growing in the ways that matter.
Spending time in the zone is an amazing approach to performance. It’s the place to both practice and perform. My life needs more of it. I had it reading the deep learning textbook each morning, but have been strongly deprived of it since. The zone means blocking literally everything else out. And once inside, it’s a wonderful mental place to inhabit.
Courage is a major determinant of success that’s overcome by the relentless through self reliance, truth and the dark side’s sense of attraction to difficulty and fear. It takes courage to believe in yourself and make decisions that look very valuable but feel contrarian on the inside.
Action focus is a function of being decisive and caring about the end outcome. It does no good to get bogged down in side processes, and so the relentless person doesn’t get distracted by nonsense around signaling at the sacrifice of a level of ability. They recognize that often the most efficient path forward is to deeply understand the material and then simply communicate that to the people that matter.

Creating a social identity that becomes a reinforcing loop
Destroying limiting beliefs through continually experiencing violations of their predictions
Paradoxicality
The mission is to 1. Inhabit multiple contradictory modes of being and 2. Integrate them to simultaneously reap the rewards of each mode.
Yin (Zen, Alignment) vs Yang (Force, Effort)
Obsession. Use Force / Effort to create obsession.
The upside of Yang is the ability to follow the optimal path independent of emotional blocks, pain, social norms, or limiting beliefs.
The upside of Yin is sustainability and effortlessness / emotional costlessness. It’s a freer state of mind.
Intentional, guided obsession transcends these tradeoffs, accomplishing the upsides of both.
This integration is difficult because
Controlling obsession is hard - stopping it when it goes to far
Obsession creates positive feedback
Obsession leads to obviously silly tradeoffs against other modes of being / sides of life
The emotional mode is compulsive, creating a lack of agency
In many ways, obsession is defined by a lack of control. Controlled obsession looks like entering obsessed mode when optimal (when working, say) and turning it off elsewhere.
This makes Obsession a level 5 technique, at the very least hard to integrate.
This requires the development of a module that stops and starts obsession consistently.

There are a few relevant dimensions. Here I focus on the principal components: Intelligence. Social. Greatness.
F(x) for Intelligence has to be insane. The goal end state is the strongest mind for problem solving. God will have read every major thinker in every important field. He’ll have processed their content and integrated it into an ensemble of worldviews that map the world with accuracy and precision. There’s depth and nuance to thought, but the decisions come quickly and decisively. The mind understands abstraction and takes advantage of it - advantage of the illusion of knowledge, and the efficiency of Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Economic thought, Psychology. Quantitative problem solving ability is general and dominant. Qualitative decision making is informed by the best humanity has to offer. Counterintuitive brilliance and critical thought are everywhere. Utterly self-reliant. Staring, unblinking, at concrete reality. A mind that appears to transcend.
F(x) for Social looks like a sprawling social empire. Daily, God confers with the most brilliant people humanity has working on the most important problems that the superorganism faces. Out of the networks emerges sub-superorganisms that accomplish complex tasks - God connects the paypal mafia, connects people in ways that advance the goals of the superorganism. He solves problems in cooperation and competition and has massive amounts of influence over the beliefs of the elite and the masses.
F(x) for Greatness looks like applying huge amounts of instrumental resources to the most important problems facing the superorganism, and solving those problems at scale. It looks like solving the meta problems that allow humanity to transcend its limitations. Greatness is discovering the new foundations on which to lay everything else. It means taking on the hard challenges and having non-marginal impacts. Setting the stage for others to make huge non-marginal contributions as well. It looks like resetting equilibria and pushing the superorganism off of local maxima and onto better, higher equilibria.
This suffices for a principle components minimum viable definition of God. Onto the plan to become this beast.
The path for me requires optimization over F’(x) and F’’(x).
The growth required has to be done foundationally. I need to see the matrix behind human behavior in economics and psychology, behind the natural world in physics, and behind the meta idea spaces of mathematics and statistics. Intellectually, this looks like textbook reading and integration of all of these critical ideas into a coherent worldview. I need to read the best of what the world has to offer, and so it’ll also look like book reading in critical fields. But textbook reading for a high level understanding of everything, and high quality books for the rest.
I need training as well. Practice problems in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and physics are necessary. I need to master the syntax as well. Thankfully, it’s general - by doing mathematics and probability first (foundations are in linear algebra, measure theory, calculus, probability theory, type/set theory, proof). Then I can move to Artificial Intelligence, Physics (E&M, Quantum), Algorithms, Optimization, Engineering. My antilibrary will grow dramatically, but that’s fine and necessary. I start this today. Foundations first. Work systematically. Problem solving in computer science (building systems in ML/AI, building web apps and doing Data Science) will be critical to being able to execute on skill building.
Socially, this growth will be optimized at the same time as I create a social empire. Consistent contact with multiple important communities will be critical. Talking to CFAR/LW on a regular basis, plus the Data Science community, plus the AI community will be hugely helpful. I’ll also be able to pull in as many people as I can to my learning growth - talking to people about the applications of Physics, Econ, Psych, etc. and practicing body language, charisma, etc. Will be critical. The quality of my social space will dictate a lot of my growth, and so I’ll explore the most brilliant spaces that I know (I have professors and Harvard/MIT students for the next few weeks, as well as the Boston meetup community) and so courage challenging with daily exploration will be critical to building this empire.
Greatness comes from directing all of these skills at important problems. The point is that I will need lots of data to train problem solving against - I need to make a lot of decisions, apply a lot of ideas and iterate over my worldview and problem solving metamodels. It also means directing my problem solving to problems of real import to the superorganism.
I’ll institute daily, weekly and monthly goals to ensure that this happens. This is what purpose and alignment look like.

Tell yourself that every aspect of your life is great, one by one, noting when you feel dissonance. Ex, relationships, work, friendships, intellectual growth, health, family, emotional / spiritual life, finances, achievement etc. Then think about what beliefs led to you not changing that aspect of your life
List mistakes that you’ve made in the past. Per mistake, list the beliefs and aliefs that lead to the mistake.
Go down the fears in the fear framework. For each domain where a fear resonates, write down beliefs about the domain that make the fear possible.
Rejection, Being Conned, Success, Helplessness, Failure, Disapproval, Being Vulnerable, Loss of Image
Generate simple valuable things that you haven’t done before. Ask yourself why you haven’t done them. If they pass a cost / benefit test, any reason not to do them is likely a limiting belief.
Look at heroes’ accomplishments, scanning for any you don’t think you’d be capable of.
Find a list of valuable skills - social skills like influence, intimacy and vulnerability creation, etc. and think through why the skill level is where it is.
Ask friends what your limiting beliefs are, or what domains you’re underperforming your potential in
Look at the situations where you’ve been angry. Check out the beliefs that led to that anger.
Also, guilt / shame and disgust.
Comfort zone expansion / prompts - note places where you’d like to push your comfort zone. Ask what limiting beliefs have held your comfort zone back.
What part of the world makes the least sense? And why are you unwilling to engage with it?
In every aspect of life, belief report. Say, “My relationships are flawless” out loud. And then notice the dissonance that comes to mind as you lied, using it to pinpoint the criticisms that .
Refining
Take a specific limiting belief.
Which experiences in my life generated this belief?
What have the specific consequences to my life from this belief been?
How is this belief supposedly helping me? What is this belief protecting me from?
What harm is coming from this belief?
Do I have the right version of the belief? Is it appropriately general or specific? How does refining it change the experiences that affect it, or the consequences of it?
Solving
For yourself:
Exposure Therapy
Ask what actions you would take if you didn’t have the given belief.
Take the action that is easiest which violates your original belief system.
Upon realizing that the feared consequence of the belief didn’t happen, take a slightly more difficult action.
Continue to take actions for 45-60 days until your belief has been completely undone by disconfirming evidence.
Reframe
Often a limiting belief is protecting you. Find versions of the belief that continue to protect you but which open up new possibilities.
Tying
Tie the belief (or notice that the belief is tied) to something concretely changeable in your life - your job, your location, a friend group - and then change that concrete thing.

Question: How much do you believe the truth thing vs. believe the useful thing? We can categorize these, we can claim that there are different types of truth. But in practice, we trade accuracy off against value. Especially if we’re not capable of compartmentalizing, it’s necessary to make sacrifices here so that you can get to objective truth.
Depending on your level of psycological control, this may or may not be a problem.
This is a True Religion. We update our beliefs in the face of the truth. We make the distinction between felt truth and objective truth.

Creativity fundamntally depends on beieving your felt truths.

It’s meta.
There’s no paradox if you have a solid type system.
It’s not a contradiction if you see them as being different objects. One is about reality. One is about the connection between emotion and your behavior.
What a disgusting world, where the conceptual scheme is binary falsifiability. So much unknowable knowledge, in that world.
There's a deep link between making concrete predictions and falsifiability.
I like this definition of truth, (realism?) which is that it exists independently of social mediation or individual perception.
There's this weird background assumption that there's 'one true path to objective knowledge', where science based on induction and science based on critical rationalism are somehow in conflict.
Reason is unreasonably effective. It's a set of rules you accumulate evidence for, and that you can run forward. And in practice it's the grounding behind most of our beliefs in mathematics and physics.
My frame is that there are a few concepts (logic, rationality, induction, prediction, generalization, causality, empiricism, verificationism, etc.) at the heart of acquiring knowledge. Every so often, a philosopher finds a particularly strong set of arguments for one concept and goes off on a tirade against the other concepts.
Knowledge isn't binary, but probabilistic.
The essence of a theory is classical rationalism, where you apply the theory to the world once you've established it and it produces utterly accurate predictions.
The problem of induction is a much more nuanced problem now, about the whens and hows of generalization. The original 'problem' of induction fell apart as soon as we make knowledge probabilistic.
Responses:
Prediction is much deeper than your email indicates you think it is. It underlies the concept of having a theory. The predictions that look like 'I'm thirsty, and drinking will alleviate it' and 'the future location of this planet is
Predictive frame is the grounding for falsification.
Predictive power is of primary importances all over the place, but those examples recede into the background as not being about prediction but just vaguely being 'science'.
The scientific method is absolutely about prediction. Our current notion of what it means to 'understand how the world works' is deeply rooted in prediction. Prediction is the standard that we use to evaluate our understanding. The formulation of a 'hypothesis' is fundamentally a prediction, or can be used to derive predictions, and is followed by an experiment that could conflict with the prediction.
Representation
Question of how to represent reality.
We see patterns, and those patterns allow us to represent reality.
Representation-Reality Distinction
Umpteen philosophers lived and died attempting to merge map and territory.
People want to change the way we perceive reality (this becomes illegal.
Philosophers try to, through some mechanism, pretend (say) that their representation of ethics is literally true. And is instantiated in reality.
There’s a deep human need to have your truth be the objective truth.
They want to change the way that they think about reality so that their representation of what reality is becomes objectively true. Rather than changing their representation to correspond to reality.
Abstraction
Similarity and the problem of induction. Our ability to see similarity between objects as essential to our ability to categorize. Every object is either an idea or not an idea. Either a thought or not a thought. Binary classifiers. Categorization was fundamental to thinking, to language, to discrete representations of reality.
You can see our ability to perceive similarity as fundamental to our decision about whether or not we can apply induction. Will the future be similar to the past? Only when they are similar do we apply induction.
The ability to create and think with concepts is of the most powerful advantages of human cognition.
Good thinkers exploit the concepts embedded in language to generalize discovered patterns across similar problems, solutions and situations.
Great thinkers learn to abstract, and in so doing create entirely new concepts that represent similarities and patterns that are novel, uncaptured by existing conceptual schemes.
What is the most general version of your solution? Of your problem? Of your idea?
By what mechanism causes your favorite technique work? What is the why behind it? And with that causal mechanism in mind, what other techniques can leverage it? And immediately you go from having one technique to having a stable of techniques, unified by their mechanism.
Can you map your problem to a more general representation (ex., from the internet to a graph, or from your leadership structure to a hierarchy) which will let you leverage bodies of existing solutions?
Assume your example, your datapoint, is just one element of an entire class of examples. What is that class? What else is in it? What axes create a space of possible examples?
Abstraction and Religion
“More beautiful than the vision from any mountain top… is the view of the world from the heights of abstraction.”
There’s a sense of awe that accompanies vastness. The extremes of size, from the vastness of the ocean or the vast blackness of outer space or the vastness of grand armies move us emotionally.
When you move sufficiently high up levels of abstraction, the vastness becomes beautiful and overwhelming.
When you look at reality from multiple levels of abstraction simultaneously, the vastness of perspectives becomes beautiful and overwhelming.
Abstraction is the making of consilience, about the unification of knowledge. With abstraction is an instance of shared structure, binding together that which always was together but had not been recognized to be together. There’s this corrective motion, from the separateness of things to the connectedness of things, which is accompanied by a sense of wholeness.
Abstracting over this process rightfully generates awe. The pattern is that you watch the connections between objects appear over and over again, and you generalize to the sense that even if you’ve failed to see or appreciate it, connections exist between every object. The feeling of ubiquity and the presence of connectedness is that generalization. And so you invert was was a hidden assumption - you move from assuming that connections don’t exist and that boundaries are real as a default to assuming that there is some notion of similarity that will hold between all objects as a default.
It’s fairly ridiculous to claim that two objects have nothing in common (taken literally). Even the existence of boundaries is a type of connectedness. But say it was true, that two objects had nothing in common. That no pattern found in one was found in the other. Then, immediately, knowledge of one object would give you fascinating knowledge about the other objects. Every pattern that occured in one would be known to not occur in the other. And because many patterns repeat frequently across almost all objects, if the objects had any level of complexity there would be a fascinating challenge in maintaining the patternlessness between them. There is not disconnectedness (for even disconnection is a form of connection), there is randomness.
There is extraordinary power into perceiving the connectedness of things. In many contexts (category theory, neurons) the connectivity structure dominates, or is, all that matters. You can know an object by what it is connected to - this principle shows up in word vectors, using this strong heuristic to create rich semantic representations of words that can be compared to one another. In a neural network, the learning of the connection strength between neurons is a general path to representing knowledge.
Abstraction to Transcendence
There are a few conceptions of transcendence which are accomplishable via abstraction.
Gestalts (wholes that are more than sum of parts, via generalization)
Lower state as trivially accomplishable by a higher state
Moving from the concrete to the conceptual
Being unknowable, unmeasurable, unseeable from the lower level
Set theoretic - one dominates the other, in a way that leads to full containment (but also much much more)
Ultimate generality / universality
Generation of universes
For each, 1. why it relates to transcendence and 2. How abstraction accomplishes it:
Gestalts
The creation of wholes that are more than the sum of their parts can be accomplished by abstraction. Take the creation of axes from properties. You can take two or three objects, and notice their shapes. For each aspect of shape (their heights, the eccentricity of their curves, etc.) there’s a particular measurement for each object. But taken together, the objects can be seen as datapoints in a space of possible objects that is defined by the axes that measure the properties that the objects have.
This space is much more general than any of the particular objects, and immediately creates a generative model for new objects: propose a new point in the space, and something new (though admittedly, it’s the restricted newness of interpolation / extrapolation rather than the creation of new axes) is brought into existence.
The perception of a gestalt, that is a more general frame out of access to limited information, is power by the discovery and generalization of shared structure found between sets of facts. It’s the generalization that can follow pattern recognition.
Lower state as trivially accomplishable from a higher state
In mathematics, representations of operations in the abstract (say, addition or multiplication) are general, and much more valuable than trying to deal with each problem on an ad hoc basis. The transformation of the operations from being about particular objects into numbers in the abstract is what allows umpteen situations to be efficiently compared to one another, turning every particular instance of a problem into a trivial and solved operation. In noticing the shared structure across addition or multiplication problems, and learning to map situations to that abstract representation (and filtering out the details that are irrelevant, say of the kind of object being added or multiplied) we can do strong transfer between umpteen situations.
Moving from the concrete to the conceptual / spiritual
The conceptual is tied in with the transcendent because until the transcendent level is reached, it exists as a conceptual possibility, but not concrete reality.
There’s also a body of properties that concepts have that tie them to religious notions. They exist outside of material reality in that the patterns that are observed (say, the laws of physics) are invariant to any action that we know how to take. Abstract representations of numbers are deeply valuable to us in an immediate way without having a clear material instantiation. And so the sense 1. That these things are real and 2. That we are incapable of interacting with them puts abstraction to them in the regime of the transcendent.
The conceptual and the spiritual are abstract patterns, rather than concrete objects that can be physically intervened on in the way that we are conventionally accustomed to. There’s a sense that the spiritual world (which exists in the minds of believers, as does other currently understood experience in this solipsistic world) is composed of these conceptual objects.
Being unknowable, unmeasurable, unseeable from the lower level
There are operations which can be performed trivially at the abstract level (say, because efficient algorithms have been discovered that operate over a dataset) that would be unseeable from the lower level representation of the problem as seen at first glance. Re-rephresenting the problem in the abstract makes umpteen solutions available (both from transfer and from the way that solutions interact with the new shape of your problem) that makes possible what would feel magical.
Ethics
Expanding the scope of tribal instincts has been a classic path for ethics. Familial and tribal bonds enable tight knit trust and cooperation. Abstracting out to the scale of towns, cities, nations, humanity, and eventually all living beings as a whole has been a natural path for ethicists looking for generality in the principles that govern interactions between living creatures.

The way that those patterns are patterned - the structure of our world - is key to our ability to model and understand it.
Modeling the structure of the world allows us to successfully interact with it (Representation).
Life depends on this order

Our world is just a small slice of the space of possible worlds, and real world data is a tiny subset of the space of possible data flows.
The world has lots of structure. And we can, by knowing that structure, interact with it well.

What does knowledge out of information mean?
If you get a raw data stream, it’s not clear what to do. If you have a data stream and an objective, you can know which parts of the data stream are worth attending to to achieve your objective. Knowledge is the version of the data that is more useful than the data itself. Which is the purpose of representation - there’s plenty of raw streaming perceptual information that all humans experience. And our brains encode rules and principles for making information useful.
Fundamental goal of machine intelligence was automating this path.
Meaning
Mainly psychological, much like Agency.
Value Systems
A person joining this religion will write down their value system. What do you value? And why do you value it?
They’ll also write down the value systems of the people around them, the common societal value systems. And what the consequences of those value systems are.
There’s a question of what’s meaningful. And usually what is meaningful is a reification of your values in the world.

When you have a belief and you realize that truth is probabilistic, it actually should feel the same but be different. You act as if the belief is true, because you realize that belief is useful. Fundamentally, you have probabilities over everything.

Unbiased (escaped from evolution) search over the space of possible value systems.
Discovering the unknown unknowns, including entirely new categories of knowledge (or, new forms of object at the level of knowledge or information itself).
Transcendence, the move to a higher mode of being, previously inconceivable.

The creation of universes.
Discovery of other objects akin to life, of which life is but one example.
Discovery of other mechanisms akin to evolution, of which evolution is but one example.
Solving / seeing clearly through the deepest problems in philosophy.

What matters is what happens in the world, objectively. Your counterfactual difference is much more important than your status or position, which are instrumental.

An Emotional Landscape
Let’s outline a distinction between objective and meta-objective (your objective’s objective).
Objective: Job. Meta-objective: Felt security, felt healthfulness, felt acceptance.
Objective: Relationship. Meta-objective: Felt acceptance, felt love, felt sex.
Objective: Marriage. Meta-objective: Deep security, felt certainty, love of children.
To a great degree this is a re-frame on goal factoring. Ask what consistently underlies your goals, and you have your meta-objectives. You can hack yourself pretty hard.
Experiential meta-objectives can be hacked in through visualization or meditative practice. Non-experiential meta-objectives go beyond you, to base reality.
This demands a distinction felt / anticipated transcendence and real transcendence.
Critics will simply say you want the feeling of having done the real thing, rather than that you actually want the real thing. And so you’re just fooling yourself to believe that you have a non-experiential meta-objective.
A thought is that self-awareness can free creatures other than us from experiential meta-objectives. But that’s a different idea than telling a human, here and now, not to have an experiential meta-objective.

This has to open with examples.
Objective: Job. Meta-objective: Felt security, felt healthfulness, felt acceptance.
Objective: Relationship. Meta-objective: Felt acceptance, felt love, felt sex.
Objective: Marriage. Meta-objective: Deep security, felt certainty, unending love.
To a great degree this is a re-frame on goal factoring. Ask what consistently underlies your goals, and you have your meta-objectives. Transfer
Abstraction is one way to map shared structure from one problem / solution / dataset to another. Transfer is what allows for efficient modeling and learning, where upon encountering a situation an intelligent being or system can bring patterns seen in data and problems from the past to bear on the new situation, and so be able to act as if it’s already seen the ‘new’ situation before, informed by situations like it. Abstraction involves identifying a property or pattern that exists (usually across many datasets / problems / examples) and then naming that pattern in a way that is general across the examples (and so which you would expect to generalize to similar examples)
There are forms of transfer that don’t move from the specific to the general, but instead relate the specific directly to the specific - one quality example of this is metaphor. Metaphor works by pointing out that one object is like another object, without necessarily spelling out exactly in which way it is similar (often, the metaphor will draw upon many intuitive and emotional properties, simultaneously). For example, take the metaphor ‘she has a heart of gold’. At one level it’s asking you to feel about her heart the way that you feel about gold. In abstract terms, you could say that the sense of awe you feel at the lustre and rarity and globally recognized value should also be felt about her heart. The way that metals can’t be changed, the strength implicit in it, the sense of being able to depend or it and (more importantly) the body of felt associations that any person moving through the world has associated with gold get transferred to this different object, the heart.
Abstraction does transfer through surprisingly similar mechanisms. Over time we build up associations between concepts and the properties and emotions that are experienced in tandem with those concepts. When we bring that concept (take an example from above: strength, or rarity, or metal) to bear in a situation, the properties associated with that concept are naturally brought to awareness when the concept is used.
The difference is that in abstraction, an explicit label is given to the set of shared properties. Take ‘strength’. What do strong things have in common? There’s an element of power, robustness, capability - there’s transfer between everything that has been described in the past and every other object with that description. And now we have an abstract object, strength, which holds that bundle of properties.
This natural build up of descriptive transfer allows us to use language to connect multitudes of experiences with one another without ever explicitly comparing them to each other. We merely have to experience the same abstract object in each context, and the transfer will follow naturally from using that abstract object to describe a new situation.
Transfer of solutions can be particularly powerful, if you realize that some abstract descriptions of problems share solutions than finding a way to represent your problem in the way that others are represented often gives you a surface for problem solving and decision making that didn’t exist before.
Transfer is at the core of induction itself. And even in deduction, the rules that it makes sense to trust are trusted for their ability to yield correct predictions in an inductive sense beforehand. Much of thinking is pattern matching between situations that you’ve seen in the past and the current situation, or is intuiting about a situation which calls upon implicit knowledge that you have also gained across time or that has been built into you through evolutionary transfer, where your instincts have been finely tuned for (say) social environments and so you can pick up on leagues of implicit knowledge emotionally based on a set of ancient and natural instinctual responses. Fight, flight or freeze responses are a pattern match to situations where that response saved the lives of the being making that response in the past, and so is present as a form of transfer from situations where stimuli were similar enough to current stimuli to trigger the same response.
Machine learning algorithms are all driven by transfer. The goal is to observe some set of datapoints, and on that basis find a set of patterns that will allow knowledge about new datapoints to be inferred. The process of transferring knowledge can be driven by different notions of similarity (which is the basis on which you expect the transfer to be successful or to fail). Often algorithms will weight the ability to do transfer on the basis of the degree of similarity to other datapoints, ex. kNN. That set of principles is general across all learning algorithms, and while transfer is often referred to as being between-dataset transfer in machine learning, each algorithms focus is this within-dataset transfer for generalization.

What is transfer?
Great examples of this are planning, pattern recognition (transfer between datapoints)
In planning, there’s a hierarchy of tasks over which you can do transfer. Say you need to save someone just hit by a car by getting them to the hospital.
At a high level, there’s a transportation problem. It can be instantiated in a few ways - ambulance, car-transport, etc. Ambulance breaks down into calling 911, identifying your current location (orienting to the street signs), communicating with the emergency operator, etc. Those are composed of lower level actions which often disappear beneath conscious awareness, say taking out a phone, opening the interface, opening the phone app, pressing the keys, putting it to your head, etc. This process is modular and transfers across domains. Regardless of who you’re calling, when you’re calling, the motions are the same. And so you think in terms of the abstracted motion (call this person / number).
Implicit Transfer
Metaphors are examples of transfer that at first look to be free of abstraction, but as they’re drawing their power from shared structure between the domains we can use them as using abstraction implicitly.
One result is that metaphors are a source of explicit abstractions so that representations and solutions can be extended to their farthest reaches.
Often the emphasis is on emotional transfer, and so the metaphor communicates more than pure information. But that transfer matters too - communication is extremely high dimensional, and the felt dimensions are more important for compelling action and building understanding than pure understanding. More on this in engineering abstractions.
Take a classic christian verse, “we are the clay, you are our potter”. There’s implicit abstraction around agency vs. the acted upon, intentionality, moldability, and craftsmanship, as well as the load of connotations that go along with the profession and the nature of the objects.
Giving examples as grounding to abstraction is common practice. Often more than one example is required to pull generalization off properly, as there will be details for particular examples that don’t necessarily generalize and transfer that can be omitted from a second or third example.
Glorious Heights of Representation
There’s power to the heights of abstraction. As the height grows, the number of objects being acted over grows. There are a huge number of nodes in a belief structure, and the impact of information grows as it becomes relevant to every node in that structure.
Say you learn something about capitalism. All of a sudden your model of every single transaction that has occurred across time, and the implications of those transactions updates. There’s power here insofar as one can take a new concept and notice the breadth of implications that come with it.
The way to generate power from lower level information is by abstracting. Say you notice that when someone takes a lower-paying job they don’t have as much time to apply and interview for higher paying jobs. This is a nice insight which may help you make that tradeoff more effectively in your life, by being aware of it. But the power comes out of abstracting this concept to opportunity cost, and realizing what the implications of opportunity cost are for the application of every finite resource (time, attention, energy, money). Even resource in that previous sentence is an abstraction over a world of objects that often need to be explicated if the impact of an update to that abstraction are going to be understood, experienced and lead to a better planning process.

About the comprehensiveness of experience, and about the creation of experiencing things. How to create panpsychic worlds if we wanted them to exist. How to create enlightenment. At a personal level, get people on a path to felt enlightenment. Ego death. The merging of their reality with the true representation of reality.

All thought is built on top of pre-conscious experience. Our raw meanings are pre-symbolic and are later translated & projected into natural language, which is a lossy and biased meaning representation. One concrete example of omnipotence is the degree of control the creator of a video game has over the nature of the game. Everything from the gravity experienced by players in a planet-like environment to the very dimensionality of the world is up to the creator.
Becoming all powerful really routs through omniscience, where we develop systems (if not speak on others behalf when it comes to you) or signal our genuine value via language patterns and exhortations of existing paralysis intersection.

The problem of where the mathematical description of the universe sits is unsolved by an informationalism which presumes that the underlying simulating universe (like our own) takes mathematics as given. There is no possibility of agency over mathematics, from this perspective, only over the operationalized physics with its cosmological constants and the interaction of x and y.
Say that we do get a theory of everything. Ideally it’s not merely descriptive, but points at the requirements for generating a universe on the basis of the accepted model.
The information from external reality we are capable of perceiving is distorted by our senses and brain, to the point that our perceptions are as informative about our constructive history and mechanics as they are informative about external reality.
Our internal reality only processes a small sample of information about the external reality. Our senses are a tiny thread in the space of possible senses.
The mathematical description of external reality uncovered by theoretical physics is utterly different from the way we perceive external reality. Ex., our perception of the continuity of ‘solid’ objects is an artifact of light and useful perception. We don’t see the empty space which dominates the object’s volume. We perceive the light that manages to bounce towards our eyes, rather than seeing the true nature of objects.

I'm interested in bridging and eventually merging formal and natural language, in both directions. The way that grammar implements logic, extended to probability theory and inference as a start. Present frontiers that excite me include the babelfish (from collaborators at Brain) enabling any natural language translation to any other natural language with a single model (which will eventually run in real time and so transform the natural landscape forever). There's the computational language frontier spearheaded by Wolfram language. The program synthesis via natural language is heavy for SQL queries right now but better language models (with a few insane gpt3 examples) are a new dawn for applications like this. The many chatbot assistants which translate language into specific real world api calls right now will edge year-by-year to allowing arbitrary programs to be implemented via voice command.
Neuralese via brain computer interface is a re-representation of thought that may be as or more important than the creation of natural language.

Ego-disidentification. This is a natural response to a realization of an eventual shared consciousness, or the internalization that experience is grounded in a biology which is modifiable. But experiential ego identification, where ‘I don’t exist, there just is’ is a position from which to think more broadly. It may be a weaker place from which to take action, where agency makes an agent-environment distinction in order to create clarity over what can and cannot be directly controlled by our biology.
I think the truth of non-duality is experientially useful. It’s not objectively useful for most goals, including engineering higher enlightenment. Letting yourself feel as the environment, acting on itself opens empathy, perhaps. It can also chart a path to action without agency, or action without emotion (which is a kind of agentic enlightenment).

‘Beyond Perception’ is the proper metaphor for Beyond Consciousness. It’s simultaneously the thing that we’re immersed in, but it’s also obvious that we can get value from different perspectives, different perceptual schemes, and that our perception is specific to the process that created us.
And to me, optimizing for conscious experience feels as narrow as optimizing for our perception when there are so many unrepresented form of perception (both in the aspect of reality being perceived and the mechanics of the perception (ex., optical nerve, vestibulocochlear (auditory) nerve))

The benefit is that the religion ends up actually creating everything that’s worth creating.
The purpose isn’t to become christianhy.
IT’s to establish the cultural bedrock necessary to make the philosophical, scientific and technological progress necessary to make transcendent enlightenment real.
We want to create something that is true. And the truth is actually quite inaccessible.
Universal basic income / post-scaricty for others
What matters is that the people added are net positive for the goals of the religion.
An improvement in technology could make everybody net-positive for the religion.
It’s not as if there’s an arbitrary 5% bar. It’s not elitist for its own sake. It’s there for the purpose of making the religion better.
Community quality: People will be joining mostly on the basis of the quality of the community. This makes exclusivity important.
Need to think about relationship with the so-called ‘masses’.
Who has succeeded with the masses?
Superheroes.
Marvell.
Capture the imagination of the masses.
It’s important to align with the archetype spread through media.
I really wish these guys would say, ‘yeah, the truth is beyond language, so we’re creating a new language’. But they never say that! They never say that.
Question: How technical do we want this religion to be?
We use a lot of technical and challenging concepts. Abstraction, for example.
One answer is that the religion needs to be deeply growthful.
Idea: Everybody inducted gets to an intro-grad student level in mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, and computer science. Everybody is expected to be above bar.
This would immediately be the most epic community to be a part of.
Mapping felt truth to objective reality (making reality align with your values) and mapping objective reality to felt truth.
Fascinating to ask how we decide which felt truths / objective truths go one way vs. the other way.
This concept of felt truth goes so far.
Meaning dump
Strongest argument for panpsychism is a metaphor to physics, where it breaks down to a fundamental particle.
Much less strong than actually measuring the particles, or measure the field, which could prove this one way or the other.
Laws of physics
Panpsychism as deep philosophical speculation
There needs to be an entire chapter about the self-modification of the doctrine / religion.
Fundamental goal - seizing control of the laws of physics. And if it turns out that experience is a fundamental law, then it’s totally on the table.
Add all of worldview breaking ideas to this.
Need to add the (perhaps, tragic?) reality that intelligence is generally internalizing the environment, by creating a copy of the environment in a mind.
World modeling and prediction as a core aspect of intelligence. Compressing the perceptual stream.
There’s a desire to escape to a higher form of intelligence. There’s a clear path here - intelligence that escapes the environment to the generator of the environment, or that escapes to the generator of the generator, etc. But maybe there’s something beyond internalizing reality. This should probably go in beyond reality.
Paradoxical - antitribal tribe, antidoctrinal doctrine, identitiless identity
Add the deep missions from each field of science, ex. The battle against entropy in thermodynamics, the creation of confirms for life in chemistry, unlocking the power of the sun in fission / fusion

Moral Realism & Suffering as goal
Relativism comes out of a sense that realism is impossible.
Relativism:
Maybe this world is better, maybe not.
Maybe that value system is better, maybe not.
This comes out of the lack of objective moral foundations. Where everything is shown to be groundless.
Evolutionary moral realism, where our values are forged in an evolutionary fire. Everyone, say, who believed in religion were able to cooperate, and so got together and killed everybody who didn’t believe. And suddenly, your entire population has a visceral instinct towards religious cooperation.
Abrupt - moral realism is really possible. Suffering exists, and is fundamentally bad.
(Wow! So disappointed. The EAs ran this, but I could never believe that any of them actually believed it.) Moral realism on the grounds that qualia exists.
Sonia: Not convinced that moral realism is possible.
It is written into the laws of the universe, because everything that suffers is a part of the universe.
But, the other kinds of life have nothing we would describe as suffering, but that is as interesting as suffering.
Difference between something being explained by the laws of physics (which is all things) and something being encoded as the laws of physics (which are very, very few things - strong force, weak force, electromagnetic force, gravitation).
S: The universe encodes suffering…
It’s inherently bad, because it feels bad, and so it should be avoided…

S: Meaning is a particle…
J: This is just psychological.
S: We should treat it as a particle until we know it’s psychological.
S: There’s a bias against things that were created by evolution that’s unnecessary.
J: The goal should be to create everything that could exist. Which is a much broader space of things than ourselves. Which is different than taking what happened to happen to us, and treating it as the fundamentally true things. We have a deep need to believe that our truths are objective truths, and have a set of religions that tell us that our felt truths are objectively true, which are wrong.
The whole point was to come up with something that was psychologically viable, and make our freedom from that untruth complete. Free us to create beings that don’t suffer at all. That don’t have a concept of suffering, because they aren’t engineered that way.
“I’m beginning to agree with what you’re saying.” In the face of the argument that we can engineer life that doesn’t experience suffering.
Need to re-do Christmas / Thanksgiving / Create our own easter.
